Performance Envelope


A term that refers to the capabilities of an aircraft design in terms of speed, altitude and maneuverability. When an aircraft is pushed, for example, by diving it at a speed higher than the manufacturer allows, it is said to be flown outside the envelope which is considered dangerous.
